  • Maria Tallchief: America’s Prima Ballerina

Maria Tallchief was born Elizabeth Marie Tall Chief on January 24th, 1925 in Fairfax, Oklahoma. She is Osage and Scots-Irish.

Maria Tallchief was a Ballerina. At age 17 she went to New York to audition. She joined Ballet Russe. She was also married to George Balachine, a choreographer, and he had even wrote some of his most famous works for her. Maria was the first Native American Ballerina and America’s first Prima Ballerina. She retired from dancing ballet in 1965, but still continued to work in the world of ballet, for a while as a director and later an advisor.
I first learned of Maria Tallchief last year. It’s not a surprise I hadn’t heard of her before since I’ve never been in ballet. But I decided to read her biography. I love reading biographies and hers was very good.
Yesterday Maria Tallchief passed away at the age of 88. I think she was an amazing and inspiring woman. She accomplished much during her career and she won’t be forgotten.
  • Books-A-Million

I went to a Books-A-Million on Wednesday. I had been in one before, a very small one that was located in a mall. They didn’t have a very good selection of books, but since the store was small, it wasn’t surprising that the selection wasn’t that great.

But the Books-A-Million I went to on Wednesday is a much larger location and before Books-A-Million was there, it was a Borders. I remember the last time I went into the Borders. It was after the announcement of Borders closing and so they were discounting everything. So many people were there. The store was crowded, very noisy and hot because they had shut the air conditioners off. They even closed the bathrooms off to customers. It was honestly kind of chaotic. People were shouting, running around and items laying on the floor. It was definitely different to a Borders store like that. However, I went to the Borders in Lancaster before they closed and it was peaceful there. The store was clean and there were a lot of people there, but they weren’t loud or running around. I still miss Borders. It was where I discovered the two books that gave me my love of reading.
Books-A-Million is nice though. It kind of has a Borders feel to it, if that makes any sense. I like Barnes and Noble too, but Borders was always my favorite. I think Books-A-Million will probably become my next favorite, but it will never completely replace Borders.
I bought a book while I was there though. I was looking through the bargain section and found The Last Apprentice: Clash of the Demons by Joseph Delaney. As most of you know, this is one of my favorite book series. I’ve read all the books up to the newest one. Clash of the Demons is book number 6, so I have read it. But I did not have my own copy of it. The only book in the series I own is the first one and slowly, I want to buy all the books so I own them. So I found book 6 and it was a hardcover, for $3.97. I bought it. I just had to. The price was very good and I just love the series.
I enjoyed my visit to Books-A-Million and was very happy to come home with a book from one of my favorite series.
Have you ever been to a Books-A-Million? What is your favorite book store?
  • I Thought It Was Spring. . .

But where I live, we’ve been having summer type weather. For the past two days, it’s been in the high 80′s here. Close to to 90. It’s been very, very hot. We might have to put the air conditioners soon because of it being so hot.

It’s nice to see things coming to life again though. The grass, the plants and trees are all coming back to life. The flowers that are up so far, are pretty. The birds are out too. They seem happy with the warm though. It is nice to hear them in the mornings again.
The doves have been outside at the bird feeders. I see them when I go out to get the mail.
And with it being warm, I am also really missing Gettysburg. When it’s warm, that is normally when me, my boyfriend and parents go to Gettysburg. I’m not sure when we will be going, or if we will go. Money problems are part of the reason we haven’t been going, but there is another reason that I’m not going to discuss it on here. I will just say that it is frustrating me very much!
Anyway, the summer-like weather has been surprising, but nice. I’ll be letting my hamsters run around in their plastic balls soon. I don’t let the hamsters in them when it’s cold because of the floors being cold. So they look forward to the summer warm.
And the first day it got really warm I braided my hair and put my leather hair wraps in.
It was nice on Tuesday night when I was delivering papers too. It would have been a nice night for a walk.
How has the weather been for everyone else?
  • What I Got In The Mail

Last week I ordered the book Lost in Foreign Passions by @Ampbreia. I ordered it from Amazon.

It came in the mail yesterday :)
I really can’t wait to read it. I’ve been wanting it read it since I first started reading Ampbreia’s blog, which was sometime in 2009. I think she is a great writer and I know I won’t be disappointed by the book.
  • Book Recommendations: Earwig And The Witch

    Book: Earwig and the Witch

    Author: Diana Wynne Jones

Original Publication Date: January 31st, 2012

    Pages: 128

Earwig is an orphan. When she was a baby she was left at the orphanage and has been there ever since. But she doesn’t want it any other way. She likes the orphanage, the people there, her friend Custard and most of all, they do what she wants.
She’s avoided being chosen all this time, but there is one couple that seems to have their eye on her.
They pick her and she is taken to her new home. Earwig doesn’t like her new home and now has to figure how out to make it so they do what she wants like at the orphanage.
I remember when this book was announced in December 2010. I was so excited! A new Diana Wynne Jones book! I didn’t care that it was for younger readers; I’ve read Wild Robert, which is also for younger readers and I just loved it.
Then only three months later Diana passed away and this became her last book. I pre-ordered this book when it was finally to be released in America in 2012 and I’ve waited all this time, nearly a year later, to read it.
I’m not sure why it’s taken me so long to read it, but I think it is because I know it’s her final book and I just wanted to wait a while before I finally sat down and read this story for the first time. What motivated me to read the book is because a blog has been doing a Diana Wynne Jones month in March since 2012. This is the second year for it and I decided this would be the book I read.
The book isn’t very long and is a quick read, but it sure is fun! I quite like Earwig and Thomas, the cat. The things Earwig does to the witch is funny, getting back at the witch for using her.
The story is exciting, fun and fast-paced. The book hooks you and it’s very easy to get right into the story. Earwig is definitely an interesting character.
After I finished reading it, the book left me wanting more. I think this would have made a wonderful series. Perhaps that’s what Diana Wynne Jones was planning? If that’s the case, it won’t happen now. However, this is still a wonderful book. A very enjoyable read. I certainly loved it.
  • A Favorite Quote

Thought I’d share one of my favorite quotes with you all today.

“Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.” – Aristotle
What is one of your favorite quotes?
  • My Saturday

Yesterday I went to Popeyes to eat. Never ate there before, but my mom wanted to go to get the new Ripp’n Chick’n. I got it too and it is really good. It came with fries and a drink. I’ll be going to Popeyes again, but I think next time I’ll try the chicken tenders. They looked good.

After eating, I went to Ollie’s Outlets. I like going to Ollie’s. They have stuff at good prices. I bought a book for 49 cents. It was book number 3 in the Crystal Doors series. And on Friday, while I was at the Dollar Tree, I looked through the books they had. I found City of the Dead by Brian Keene. I was so happy to find it.
Anyway, Ollie’s has a lot of neat stuff. I like shopping there and at Big Lots too.
After Ollie’s, I came home. I watched a documentary special on the channel Bio. It was called Alien Encounters. It was pretty interesting. Two different people were on there that had been abducted by aliens.
I was also just relaxing and looking at websites after I came home. So I didn’t do too much on Saturday, but it was a nice day. I got to eat at some place new and really liked it. I just wish there were more Popeyes around here. The closest one to me is in Harrisburg, which is where I went. I’m not exactly sure why there isn’t more around.
Well, I hope everyone else has been having a nice weekend.
  • New Addition To My Wall

Yesterday I went to the Dollar Tree to buy a picture frame. I think it was last year that @Aloysius_son sent me one of his paintings. It’s beautiful. I love it and I’ve been wanting to buy a frame for a while. So I was out yesterday and decided that I would finally get a frame for the painting.

I found a nice wood frame and now the painting is hanging on my wall.
So that is my new addition to my wall. Now I can look at this beautiful painting every day :)
  • Books That Changed My Life

@adamswomanback wrote a post yesterday asking people what is a book that is important to them and why. Well, I have more than one and I’ve decided to share them.

I know it might be hard to believe, but I wasn’t always the big reader that I am. I think it’s mainly because I had difficulty learning to read and this took away my desire to read. But there are two books that got me into reading. The first being The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. I was 13 or 14 when I read it and didn’t know at the time it was a classic. I didn’t know who the author was, or that it was written in the 1960′s. But when I read it, none of that mattered. I was instantly taken into Ponyboy’s world and it has left an everlasting impact on me. It was a surprise because I didn’t know books could do that, but they do and they can very much become a part of you and who you are. I learned this with The Outsiders. I could relate to the characters as I felt like an outsider sometimes and my teen years were a difficult time for me. The book very much an escape for me, a place I could go that would take me away from my life.
And another impact it had on me is that I started writing stories because of the book and its author, S.E. Hinton. She was only 16 when she first wrote it. She inspired me and it’s because of S.E. Hinton I want to be an author.
The second book that got me reading is Slam! by Walter Dean Myers. I haven’t read all of his books, but Walter Dean Myers is a good writer and like with S.E. Hinton, I’m happy to discover his books. Walter Dean Myers and S.E. Hinton helped me find my love of reading.
Like I said, my teen years were difficult for me. But there was another book that helped me to feel better and know eventually everything would be okay. If Only by Geri Halliwell is that book. It was the first biography I ever read and growing up, the Spice Girls were my role models. I still look up to them. I read If Only to try and get a better understanding of Geri and of why she left. She’s not perfect, she’s made mistakes, but she was very determined to become famous. She worked hard, as did the other Spice Girls and she is a inspiration to me.
The next biography I read was Catch a Fire by Melanie B, who is better known as Scary Spice. I have always thought she is an amazing woman. When I first became a fan, she was the one that stood out to me. She had big hair, she was crazy (in a good way), spoke her opinion and loves leopard print. As some of you know, when I was a teenager I hated the fact that I had white skin. I wish that I was like other members of my family and looked Cherokee. It was something I struggled with for a long time and I experienced a lot of racism as well. Well, Melanie is biracial. Her mother is English (white, if that’s what you prefer) and her dad is Nevisian. She has always said she is proud of being biracial and even said it again in her book. She has never identified as just black, or just white because she is both and proud of that fact. She even said that she was teaching her daughter that too, that she is both too. I didn’t quite realize it at the time, but she planted a seed in me and maybe it took a while to grow, but it did. She helped me to learn to be happy with who I was and be proud of what I am, a Cherokee of a mixed heritage.
The next is a trilogy, but I think it definitely did change the way I think, even if it was just fiction. His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman are some of my favorite books. They are very well-written, but the main character, Lyra, is just great and is a strong female character. I felt I could relate to her. She spoke her mind, but the trilogy itself just gave me a lot to think about. I know a lot of bad things have been said about the trilogy, but it’s not bad, it’s not evil and teaches whoever reads it good lessons. These are books that will always stay with me.
And some books don’t need to be very long to leave an impact. Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt is a good example of this. I watched the movie many years before reading the book. The movie is good, but has some differences. To me, the book has a summery feel, a very calming and slow kind of feel to it. Would I want to live forever like the Tucks? I don’t really know. But what I lived from the book is that you doesn’t matter how long you live, but that you live. And I do my best to live each moment, to do what I want and go after my dreams. After all, life isn’t about being miserable. It’s about learning, growing and being happy.
The next book is one I’ve blogged about often and the author too. I read it shortly after reading Tuck Everlasting. Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones is a fantasy book. It has its funny moments, but I found myself connecting to the main character Sophie. She was the oldest and therefore, doomed to never seek her fortune. She would just have to be happy with whatever life gave her, even if it meant just working in her father’s hat shop. Well, the Witch of the Waste turns Sophie into an old woman and you would think this would be horrible for her. But no, this form of being an old woman, Sophie changes. She’s not the same girl content with whatever life gives her. She wants more, she just wants to do what she wants.
For a few years I had quit writing because of what someone said to me. But after reading Howl’s Moving Castle and discovering Diana Wynne Jones, I started writing again. This time, I started to write fantasy and that is my trilogy is, young adult fantasy. Diana Wynne Jones has been a huge inspiration to me and since Howl’s Moving Castle was the first book I read by her, it means a lot to me.
The next is a manga series and it’s called Revolutionary Girl Utena. I love this series. Utena is a strong female character and really shows that a girl can do anything she wants, even be a prince.
And there is The Last Apprentice series by Joseph Delaney. I read the first book in 2009 and I’m not sure why I waited so long to continue the series. But this year, I decided to continue it and I’m caught up on all the books now. Book number 12 comes out in September. I’m not going to say too much because I’m waiting until the final and 13th book comes out and I read to give my complete thoughts on the series. I will say all the books really make me think and all in their way, have left an impact on me.
I could probably name some more books, but I’ll stop here.
What book or books are important to you?
  • Funny Hamster Pictures

I love hamsters and often I search google for hamster pictures, even funny ones. Thought I’d share some I found recently.

Hope you all enjoy the pictures and have a nice day :)
